This view of Orange Street at North Seventh Street is unusual because unlike most post cards showing this vicinity it faces east not west. The police station and all of the buildings on the south side of the street (to the viewers right) fell to make way for route 280. On the north side of the street many of the buildings visible here are now gone. Some were torn down and replaced by newer buildings while others were demolished and not replaced. The closer one got to the East Orange line above Roseville Avenue almost all the buildings vanished. Those lots were filled with two family homes in the late 1990’s. The commercial aspect of upper Orange Street has , with a few exceptions, completely vanished. This post card returned to the U.S. only last week after spending over 100 years in England !
Newark's Attic 
As a very young child actually I was born one block over on Sussex Av in the 1930’s and this is very touching for me to reminisce about the old neighborhood. I do so miss living there even though I hear it has gone steadily down hill since. What has happened to my old neighborhood? It used to be so family oriented . But I think I most miss my family who resided there out of necessity trying to survive the depression of the 1930’s. This is what made families all stay close to one another in order to have a feeling of security and safety. Then when WW11 came , my two brothers signed on and joined in the services to our country. My oldest brother joined the Army Air Corps and was sent off to Iceland, Egypt and I don’t know what else. I was only about three years old at the time. I’ll never forget the big party we had at my new home in Belleville NJ and my Mom was elated to have Michael home once again. The whole family came together to welcome him home It was like a Hollywood movie.
