Founded in 1928 by the City of Newark, Newark Airport is one of the oldest in the nation. The growth that came easily to New York’s two airports came harder for Newark’s airfield. When LaGuardia Airport opened in New York it immediately siphoned off a large percentage of Newark’s business and nearly put it under. Then in 1952 after two planes crashes, one almost hitting an orphanage in Elizabeth, the airport was closed and it’s fate again hung in the balance. Fortunately for todays traveler the airport is still here and thriving.
