This post card depicts the cooper shop of the Feigenspan P.O.N. (Pride of Newark) Brewery. Cooper shops were where the wooden beer barrels were made. I own a wooden keg from the Krueger Brewing Co. and believe me it has far more charm than an aluminum keg. Every brewery had a cooper shop. What is of particular interest to me is the fact that they depicted the barrel making process at all. While this seems very interesting to modern eyes the breweries typically didn’t show such mundane functions to the public. It’s sort of like giving attention to the box and not the pizza.
This card shows the whole barrel making process with shot of the cooper shop building as well. One of my favorites!
Great Site! Nice collection of a city where I spent many days.
