The Borden’s Milk Man

This photo from 1936 shows the Borden’s milk man posing in his milk wagon with some neighborhood children. The Borden processing plant was located on the corner of Nesbitt and Orange Streets. The building still stands on that corner. I have also included a small round milk cap insert. For those who don’t know what that is I will explain. Milk came in glass bottles with paper caps and the cardboard disc was pressed into the center of that cap to hold it in there tight.IMG_2452IMG_2459

  1. WOW! I remember Borden’s glass bottles with a milk cap insert delivered to our house from a hoarse drawn wagon.

  3. Hello: I was born on Sussex Ave in August 1037 at home. I used to walk over to St Lucy’s RC Church when I was a child and would go one day a week to Catechism classes The one thing a really remember with the greatest of trepidation was having to cross over the bridge on James st . As I would start to go over the bridge, it would never fail that a huge train would begin to come under the bridge and send up a huge cloud of smoke and I, as a child , would be so frightened that I would crouch down holding on to the metal fencing. But the most disappointing thing for me was to bring my children to my old nieghborhood to see my old home and the house I was born. But much to my disappointment was the New Hope Baptist Church had knocked down my childhood home for the building of their new church. And therefore had to home to show my children. I was in tears. But that’s how it goes these days. All one’s memories are there only to be turned into rubble.

    I hope to see what has happened to the big Borden’s building. Even though it was an old neighborhood It was my neighborhood. Is the Geiger Calendar company still there?

    1. My godmother live across the street on Orange St. directly across from the Borden’s milk factory, which has been gone for many years.

  4. This is my old neighborhood. I miss it terribly and I remember fondly lots of memories with my wonderful family. I was born on Sussex Av in 1937. Always walked pass you Borden’s building on my way to St Lucy’s Church. My Aunt Rose had a bakery across the street from St Lucy’s.

    I would love to hear from you whatever happened to Borden’s and is it still there..
